A Legendary History: Lamoka & Waneta Lakes

Nestled between Keuka and Seneca Lakes, Lamoka and Waneta Lakes are rich with both natural beauty and captivating legend. Long before summer cottages dotted their shores, these waters were part of a great Native American territory, alive with stories passed down through generations. According to one local legend, Lamoka was the son of a powerful warrior, and Waneta was the daughter of a great chief. Their forbidden love was set against the backdrop of rivalry between the Lamoka and Waneta tribes. Their story, marked by fierce battles and unwavering devotion, echoes the dramatic and romantic spirit of the region. Today, these lakes stand not just as scenic retreats, but as keepers of a timeless tale woven into the very landscape of the Finger Lakes.
